Her Name Was Kelly

Michael and Kelly by a tree
Kelly at Christmas
In a life defined by abandonment, she became the exception. The person who made family real.

By nine, Michael had lived in more homes than birthdays. Violence from the people meant to protect him. Indifference from the people paid to care. Group homes where silence kept you safer, and the only constant was the next move. Survival wasn't given. It was negotiated.

Kelly entered his life as a Court Appointed Special Advocate. A temporary role. Document the case. Attend the hearings. Take him places. Move on.

She didn't.

A routine assignment became twenty-three years of unwavering presence. Loyalty that outlasted every failure along the way. In a life defined by abandonment, she became the exception. The person who made family real.

Then she was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

As an adult and now a father, Michael faced the loss he never prepared for: the woman who chose him, every day, when no one else did.

Her Name Was Kelly is the story of what one person can mean to a life the system wasn't equipped to save — and what happens when you lose them.

About Michael

Michael Custos grew up in group homes throughout Southern California. He learned early that survival required showing up, paying attention, and refusing to disappear. Those instincts carried him through over a decade in sales — building a career and a family from the ground up.

Now he's writing to ensure the next generation knows what Kelly taught him: that one person's consistency can break cycles that seemed unbreakable.

Her Name Was Kelly is his first book.
